Sam Keith was one of the most distinctive artists in comics history. His raw, expressive style broke every rule of traditional comic art and created something entirely new. He passed away in 2026, leaving behind a body of work that continues to inspire.

Keith is best known for The Maxx — his creator-owned masterpiece that blurred the line between superhero comics and surrealist art. The Maxx Maxximized hardcovers from IDW are the definitive collected editions with remastered colors. All 7 volumes are now out of print and highly collectible — check eBay and AbeBooks for availability.

Batman/The Maxx: Arkham Dreams brought Keith's surreal vision to Gotham City in a crossover that only he could have drawn.

He also drew the first five issues of Neil Gaiman's The Sandman, establishing the visual tone of one of the most important comic series ever published. His work on Wolverine in Marvel Comics Presents (collected in Wolverine Omnibus Vol. 3 and Vol. 4) helped define the character's feral side. These volumes are out of stock at major retailers but sometimes appear on eBay.

If you see any of these in stock, don't hesitate — Sam Keith's work only appreciates in value, and his out-of-print editions rarely come back.
